The Palais des Beaux-Arts is the large fine arts museum on Place de la République in Lille, northern France. Opened in the early 1890s, it ranks among the biggest art museums in the country outside Paris, and it anchors one of the most imposing squares in the city.

The story behind it

The square itself tells a story of growth. In 1858 Lille roughly tripled in size by annexing the neighbouring communes of Wazemmes, Moulins, Esquermes and Fives. The old fortifications were taken down, and the new open ground made room for a grand showpiece square. It was first named Place Napoléon III under the Second Empire, then renamed after the Republic once the Third Republic was established.

The square still shows both regimes. On one side stands the Prefecture of the Nord, a symbol of state power. Facing it is the Palais des Beaux-Arts, a symbol of culture, built in the later decades of the 19th century. The museum's building, with its monumental classical facade, was designed to make the case that a major industrial city deserved a major art collection.
