Couples and families with older children visiting Hamburg walk the harbour, Speicherstadt and Elbphilharmonie while following Abraham Ruah, a Sephardic refugee on the run in 1582, with a stretch through the Portuguese Quarter for history fans. It takes about two and a half hours. Skip it if 3.5 km is too far, or if a plot opening with a knife at the throat would upset your youngest.

You start at Landungsbrücken and pass the Alter Elbtunnel, the museum ship Rickmer Rickmers, Baumwall, Kehrwiederspitze, the Speicherstadt, the Elbphilharmonie, Sandtorhafen and the Marco-Polo-Terrassen before finishing at Strandkai. Along the way the route also takes in the Gustav-Adolfs-Kyrkan, the Portuguese Quarter and the Michelwiese.
