Sobre Berlin Wall Monument
The Berlin Wall Monument in Chicago is a memorial to the Berlin Wall, the barrier that split the German capital for nearly three decades. It sits on the city's north side, in the area around Lincoln Square, and gives passers-by a reason to stop and think about how one city was divided and then suddenly reopened.
The story behind it
The Berlin Wall ran about 96 miles around West Berlin, with roughly 27 of those miles cutting through the city itself. It was not a single wall but a double barrier, with a guarded border zone between the two walls, watched from towers by armed guards. For East Germans, crossing it without permission was extremely dangerous.
Its end came almost by accident. At a routine press conference on November 9, 1989, Communist Party official Günter Schabowski said East Germans could cross into West Berlin immediately. He meant that people could begin applying for travel visas under easier rules, but listeners took him at his word and crowds hurried to the border crossings. Guards, swamped by the crowds and unable to get clear orders from their superiors, were left to decide for themselves. At around 11:30 p.m., one guard opened a crossing and let people through in large numbers, and others followed. After that night, the East never regained full control of its border.
What to look for
- Look at the scale of the monument and compare it with the 11 to 15 feet that the real wall stood, to get a feel for the barrier it represents.
- Check for any plaque or inscription nearby that explains the monument and how it came to be in Chicago.
- Notice the setting: a quiet north side neighbourhood street makes a striking contrast with the story of a divided city.
- Think about the date on the story, November 9, and how a single misread announcement changed so much.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on a short stop of 10 to 15 minutes, enough to read, look and take a photo.
- Daylight is best for photos and for reading any signage.
- The monument is easy to combine with a wander through nearby Lincoln Square, where cafes, shops and tree-lined streets are close at hand.
- If you plan to visit a specific site nearby, check current opening hours before you go.
See it on a quest
