Families on a Chamonix holiday with school-age children, and visitors curious about the town's mountaineering and Olympic past, will enjoy this free 3.9 km puzzle walk from the Tourist Office past the Statue Paccard and the ice rink to the Aiguille du Midi cable car. Allow about two hours for medium-difficulty puzzles. If you want a live guide to quiz on climbing history, or have only toddlers, pick something else.

It works like an outdoor escape game on your phone. The app leads you through Chamonix, tells the story of each place and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you, with the mountains and the Olympic spirit as the theme. Puzzles are rated medium difficulty.

Is there a free walking tour of Chamonix?

This quest is free to play. It is self-guided, so there is no guide and no group to join. You start whenever you like, follow the app for about 3.9 km through town and can pause and continue later.

Where does the walk start and finish?

It starts at the Chamonix Mont Blanc Tourist Office and finishes at the Téléphérique Aiguille du Midi, so it does not end where it began. On the way you pass the Église Saint-Michel, the Statue Paccard, the ice rink, the railway station and Maison UTMB.

How long does it take and is it good for kids?
