Sobre Hadji Hussein Mosque
The Hadji Hussein Mosque is a historic mosque in the old part of Belogradchik, a small town in north-western Bulgaria best known for its red rock formations and fortress. It dates from the Ottoman period and is protected as a cultural monument. It is remembered as much for a local legend of a carved rose as for its architecture.
The story behind it
Belogradchik was part of the Ottoman Empire for centuries, and the Hadji Hussein Mosque is one of the buildings that remain from that time. Local accounts link it with the era of the Vidin region's Ottoman governors and with a tradition of religious tolerance, and they describe it as a place of both architectural and artistic value.
The best-known story concerns the woodwork. According to local legend, a Bulgarian master carver named Stoyne made the decorative wood carvings for the mosque. One of them was a rose. The tale says he died suddenly before finishing it, and his beloved Ayşe completed the petals over the following nights, then took her own life. It is a legend, so treat it as folklore rather than recorded history, but it is the story locals tell about this building.
What to look for
- Notice the minaret and the roofline of the mosque, and how the building sits among the older houses of the town centre.
- Look up from the street to the rock formations rising behind the rooftops, which give Belogradchik its unusual skyline.
- Think of the carved rose from the legend as you look at the building, and remember that fine woodwork was central to the story of its craftsmen.
- Take in the quiet side street setting on ul. Petko Kazandzhi, a good contrast with the busier fortress area.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the mosque and its surroundings, longer if you pair it with a stroll through the old town.
- Check whether the mosque is open to visitors before you go, and if it is, dress modestly and treat it as a place of worship.
- Soft morning or late afternoon light is best for photographing the building with the rocks behind it.
- The Belogradchik Fortress and the rock formations are nearby, so it fits easily into a half-day on foot.
See it on a quest
