Sobre Telefèric de Montjuïc (Montjuïc Cable Car)
The Telefèric de Montjuïc is a gondola lift that carries visitors up the slopes of Montjuïc hill in Barcelona, with wide views over the city. It has been part of the hill's landscape since the 1970s and is one of the most relaxed ways to see the park from above.
The story behind it
The cable car dates from the 1970s and was built to link the green slopes of Montjuïc with the summit near the castle. Today it runs as a closed-cabin gondola, a modern version of the lift that generations of locals and visitors have used to climb the hill.
There are three stations: one near the base of the park, a middle stop at a viewpoint, and one at the top next to Montjuïc Castle. It is not part of the ordinary public transport network, so it needs its own ticket. Ride it for the views, which stretch over the city and the hill's best-known sights rather than for the speed.
What to look for
- The Olympic Stadium, which you can pick out among the trees of the hill and which recalls Barcelona's Olympic years.
- The Joan Miró Foundation, tucked into the hillside, a landmark for anyone interested in modern art.
- The Poble Espanyol, the open-air architectural village on the slope below, easy to spot from the cabin.
- The shape of Montjuïc itself, with its gardens and paths below you and the castle waiting at the top of the line.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 30 to 45 minutes if you only want to ride, longer if you get off to explore the viewpoint or the castle.
- Pick a clear day, ideally morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and the views carry furthest.
- Check current opening hours and ticket details before you go, as the service can change with the season and the weather.
- Because the line has three stations, you can ride one section, stroll through the park, and return later by foot or another route.
See it on a quest
Magical Barcelona: Witchcraft at Montjuic Castle is a good way to see the cable car in context. You reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route across Montjuïc, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group, so you can play it at your own pace with friends or family.
