Starting and finishing at Porta Camollia, this 3.3 km loop passes Piazza del Campo, the Giraffa and Bruco fountains and the Istrice church of Santa Maria. Palio fans and repeat visitors get the symbols and stories behind the 17 contrade at their own pace. If you want a live guide to question, or cannot manage about two and a half hours on foot, pick a guided tour or something shorter.

The contrade are Siena's 17 historic districts. They were born in the Middle Ages to support the city's defense, and each grew into a proud, living community with its own symbols, rituals and identity. The quest visits several of them, including the Giraffa, Bruco, Torre, Selva, Lupa and Istrice.
Is this a self-guided walk around Siena?
Yes. The app leads you from place to place on your phone, tells the story of each stop and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you. There is no guide and no group to join, and you can pause and continue later.
Will it help me recognise the contrade flags and symbols?
Each contrada has its own symbols, and the route takes in the places where they show up, from fountains and flags to churches and piazzas. Stops include the Giraffa fountain, the Bruco fountain, the Lupa column and the Istrice museum, church and circolo.
Where does it start and how long does it take?
The walk starts at Porta Camollia and loops back there, covering 3.3 km. Allow around 2.5 to 3 hours including the puzzles. Along the way you pass Piazza Indipendenza, the Monte dei Paschi bank, a war memorial and Piazza del Campo.
Do we need to book a time, and can we play as a group?
No booking slot is needed. The route is open around the clock, though it is better in daylight, and one ticket covers your whole group. Make sure your phone is fully charged or bring a power bank, as the app runs throughout the walk.
