O Marvin's Garden
Marvin's Garden is a small park on Ballard Avenue NW in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. A bell tower stands on the site of the old Ballard City Hall, and the park is named after a well-loved local figure. It is a quick stop that tells the story of a mill town that was once its own city.
The story behind it
Before 1907, Ballard was an independent city and a major centre of shingle manufacturing. Its city hall was built on this corner in the 1890s, and a large brass bell hung above it to call the town to its business. Growing pains followed, above all a shortage of clean water, and in 1907 Ballard's voters chose to join Seattle. The old city hall bell sounded as the town's independence ended.
The bell left the neighborhood for years. City Hall was later used as a police precinct and was eventually demolished. In 1976 the bell came home when a tower was built on the old city hall site, in the same year the Ballard Avenue Historic District was marked with a visit from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, a nod to the area's Scandinavian roots. The little park around the tower is named for Marvin Sjoberg, a local character affectionately known as the unofficial Mayor of Ballard.
What to look for
- The bell tower itself, which holds the brass bell that once called Ballard's citizens to their city hall.
- The small scale of the park, a reminder that this corner once held the seat of a whole independent city.
- The brick storefronts along Ballard Avenue, part of the historic district that grew up around the old town centre.
- Any plaques or markers near the tower that mention Ballard's history or the garden's namesake.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the garden and tower, longer if you want to wander the surrounding blocks.
- The park is outdoors and you can see it from the street, so there is no need to plan around opening times.
- Pair it with a stroll along Ballard Avenue, which is lined with older buildings, shops, cafes and pubs.
- Late afternoon and early evening are pleasant for photos, when the street is lively and the light is softer.
