There was an alarming disruption at the San Diego Zoo. The front gates burst open and many of the animals fled into Balboa Park. Leonardo the Lion tried to round them up outside the gates until they panicked and scattered again.
See if you can help him gather the herd to escort them back home. Leonardo has set out ahead of you to convince his friends that all is well. He needs your help and has dropped some clues.

Families with primary-school children spending a day in Balboa Park can follow a detective story: help Leonardo the Lion round up escaped zoo animals and work out who caused the chaos, on a 5.8 km loop past the carousel, Spanish Village, the Japanese Friendship Garden and the big museums. Where does the quest start and finish?
It starts and ends at the Balboa Park Miniature Railroad, so you finish where you began. The route loops through Balboa Park, where the story picks up after the animals have escaped through the zoo's front gates and scattered across the park.
Is there an app game for exploring Balboa Park?
Yes. This quest is played on your phone, which guides you between 13 stops in Balboa Park, including the Natural History Museum, the Air & Space Museum and the Old Globe. At each place you hear its story and solve a puzzle that helps Leonardo the Lion find his friends.
How long does it take and how far is the walk?
Plan on about two hours, with roughly 5.8 km of walking. You can pause at any point, for lunch, a carousel ride or a museum visit, and continue later, which makes it easy to fit around the rest of a day in the park.
Is it good for kids?
It is aimed at primary-school children and their parents. Kids get a rescue story with a lion character and detective clues to crack along the way. The walk is nearly 6 km, so very young children may tire before the end unless you take breaks.
Do we need to book a time, and can we play as a group?
No booking or set time is needed: start whenever you like, with no guide and no other groups. One ticket covers your whole group, up to the number of devices stated, so the family can play together and share the clues.
