O Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum is a classical memorial building in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, dedicated to honoring the region's military veterans. Opened in 1910 and designed by architect Henry Hornbostel, it began as a tribute to Civil War soldiers and sailors and today also serves as a museum of military history.
The story behind it
The hall was built to honor the Civil War veterans of Allegheny County, at a time when many of those veterans were still alive and the war was within living memory. Henry Hornbostel, who also shaped the look of the nearby Carnegie Mellon campus, gave it a grand classical design meant to feel like a public monument as well as a working building.
Over the decades its purpose widened. The museum now remembers service members from later conflicts too, and the building has continued to host ceremonies, gatherings and events, so it works as a civic space as well as a memorial.
What to look for
- Study the monumental stone facade, with its classical proportions and carved detail, which was designed to give the building the weight of a true memorial.
- Look at how the building sits along Bigelow Boulevard, framed by the larger cluster of Oakland landmarks around it.
- Notice the dedications and inscriptions that speak to the building's original purpose of honoring Civil War soldiers and sailors.
- If you go in, look for the museum displays that trace military service from the Civil War through later conflicts.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 20 minutes to see the outside and its surroundings, and more if you plan to tour the museum. Check current opening hours and access before you go.
- Oakland is easy to explore on foot, and the Cathedral of Learning, Schenley Plaza and the Carnegie museums are all close by.
- Daylight is best for photographs of the facade, and a calm morning gives you the most room to take it in.
- Combine it with a walk through the rest of Oakland rather than treating it as a stand-alone stop.
