O Norwich Guildhall
Norwich Guildhall is a medieval civic building on Guildhall Hill in the centre of Norwich, completed around 1413. It was the seat of the city's government for more than five centuries, and its chequerboard walls of flint and stone still show how wealthy and self-governing Norwich was in the Middle Ages.
The story behind it
The Guildhall went up in the early 1400s, just after King Henry IV granted Norwich a charter that gave the city independence from the rest of Norfolk. With it, Norwich could run its own affairs and choose its own mayor each year. A town hall of this size and finish was a statement that the city had arrived.
The building then stayed at the heart of local government for a very long time. It remained the home of the city's administration until a new City Hall was built in 1938, which stands close by on the other side of the market.
What to look for
- The chequerboard pattern of flint and stone on the walls, a decorative technique that turns a plain material into something showy.
- The overall scale of the building, which is large and carefully finished for a town hall of its date.
- Its position on Guildhall Hill above the market, which shows how closely civic power and trade were tied together.
- The contrast with the 1938 City Hall nearby, a good way to compare six centuries of civic architecture in a single view.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 10 to 15 minutes to look at the exterior and take photos; you can see it from the street at any time.
- Check current opening hours and access before you plan to go inside, as the use of the building can change.
- Soft morning or late afternoon light brings out the texture of the flint and stone.
- Norwich Market, City Hall and the castle are all a short walk away, so it fits easily into a wider stroll around the centre.
See it on a quest

Medieval Norwich Walking Tour: A Stranger Escape Game suits this building especially well, given its medieval roots. You walk between the old streets at your own pace, hear the story of each stop on the spot and solve a puzzle as you go. One ticket covers the whole group.
