Behind the elegant Greek Revival columns on Mosley Street hides what has been called "the most refined little building in Manchester," and once you step inside, you'll understand why. The Portico Library

Manchester Town Hall is one of the finest Victorian Gothic buildings in the world, a Grade I listed masterpiece designed by Alfred Waterhouse and opened in 1877.

Waterhouse won the commission in 1867 from a competition that attracted 137 entries. The building took nine years to construct, using 14 million bricks, and its 85-metre clock tower houses "Great Abel," a bell named after Mayor Abel Heywood who championed the project.

The interior is equally impressive. The Great Hall features the Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown, a series of 12 paintings illustrating key moments in the city's history, from the Romans at Mancenion to the opening of the Bridgewater Canal. Brown worked on the murals from 1879 until his death in 1893.

The Rochdale Canal St Tow Path Bridge
