Cais das Colunas is where Lisbon meets the Tagus, and it has been welcoming arrivals in grand style for centuries. These iconic marble steps at Praca do Comercio were designed by architect Eugenio dos Santos as part of the city's ambitious rebuilding after the devastating 1755 earthquake. The two monumental columns that give the pier its name are thought to have been modeled on the legendary columns of Solomon's Temple, adding layers of symbolic meaning to what might otherwise seem like a simple waterfront landing.

For centuries, this was the VIP entrance to Lisbon. Heads of state, royalty, and dignitaries arriving by ship would step off their vessels and onto these marble stairs. Queen Elizabeth II continued that tradition as recently as 1957, passing between the two columns just as countless rulers had before her. When the Royal Palace still stood nearby, the Cais served as its grand waterfront doorway.

The columns were dismantled for restoration between 1996 and 2008, and Lisbon used the opportunity to extend the Metro line beneath the site. When they returned, they resumed their centuries-old role as sentinels over one of Europe's most photogenic waterfronts. Today, sitting on these steps watching the light play across the Tagus is one of Lisbon's simplest and most beautiful pleasures.
