O De Vere House
De Vere House is a late medieval timber-framed house on Water Street in Lavenham, Suffolk, linked to the de Vere family, the Earls of Oxford, who shaped the town's fortunes. It is one of the best-known buildings in a village full of crooked, colourful Tudor houses, and it is easy to recognise from the street.
The story behind it
Lavenham grew rich on the wool and cloth trade, and the de Veres, one of the most powerful noble families in England from the Norman period to the Elizabethan age, held the manor here. Under their lordship the town prospered, and the house carries their name as a reminder of that link.
The building itself dates from the medieval period, when Lavenham was among the wealthiest towns in the country for its size. Its heavy oak frame, leaning lines and age are typical of what survived because the cloth boom faded and the town was never rebuilt. In more recent years the house has also appeared on screen, and fans of the Harry Potter films may recognise it as a setting from the story.
What to look for
- The exposed oak timber frame, with its uneven, leaning lines that show how the house has settled over the centuries.
- The steep roof and the pattern of the plaster panels between the beams, which are typical of Suffolk cloth-town houses.
- The wider run of Water Street, where neighbouring timber-framed buildings show how far the wool money once reached.
- The details of the doorway and windows, which give a sense of the building's age and how it has been altered over time.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 10 to 15 minutes to look at the house from the street and take photographs, longer if you also wander the surrounding lanes.
- Check whether the house is open to visitors before you go, as access can change. Treat it as a building to admire from outside unless you know otherwise.
- Early morning or late afternoon usually gives quieter streets and softer light on the timber.
- Lavenham is compact and walkable, so you can easily combine De Vere House with the Market Place and the village's other timber-framed buildings.
