O Souq Waqif
Souq Waqif is the traditional market of Doha, Qatar, a maze of lanes lined with spice stalls, textile shops, handicraft sellers and cafes. Its name means the standing market in Arabic, and it remains the place where locals and visitors come to shop, eat and stroll in the old heart of the city.
The story behind it
The market grew from a simple trading place where Bedouin families brought goods and livestock to sell to townspeople, and the name is said to come from the way sellers stood to trade. Herbs, spices and salt were long among the most valued goods in markets like this, and spice sacks are still a big part of the souq today.
In the 2000s the souq was rebuilt and restored to look like the old Doha market, with mud-coloured rendered walls, exposed timber beams and narrow, shaded alleys. That restoration is why it feels so traditional now. Nearby, the Al Fanar Mosque (the Qatar Islamic Cultural Center) rises with its distinctive spiral minaret. Mosques in Qatar were historically built from coral rock, mud and wood, and many had a courtyard with a basin of water for washing before prayer.
What to look for
- Look up at the timber beams and rough rendered walls, which give the buildings their old-market character.
- Walk past the spice stalls, where open sacks of spices and dried herbs are piled in bright, fragrant heaps.
- Find the spiral minaret of the Al Fanar Mosque, which stands out above the rooftops near the souq.
- Notice the small details of the lanes: lanterns, carved doors and the way the alleys open into courtyards with cafes.
Tips for your visit
- Allow at least an hour or two to wander, longer if you want to stop for a meal or tea.
- Evening is usually the most pleasant time, as the air is cooler and the lanes feel livelier, but check current opening hours for individual shops.
- Entry to the souq itself is free, as it is an open public market, though you can go inside shops and cafes as you please.
- Wear comfortable shoes for the uneven lanes, and be ready to haggle politely if you buy from a stall.
