O Eglise Saint-Gimer
Église Saint-Gimer is a 19th-century Neo-Gothic church on Place Saint-Gimer in Carcassonne. It is tied to the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, the name behind the restoration of the city's medieval ramparts. It shows a side of Carcassonne that many visitors miss: the 19th-century city, built in a medieval style.
The story behind it
The church dates from the 19th century and was built in the Neo-Gothic style, a revival of medieval forms that was fashionable across France at the time. Route creators credit it to Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, the architect best known for restoring the walls and towers of the Cité of Carcassonne.
That link is what makes the church interesting. In the same century that the old fortress was being repaired and reimagined, a new parish church rose in the same Gothic vocabulary. Seen together, the two show how the 19th century looked back at the Middle Ages and rebuilt it in its own way.
What to look for
- Look at the pointed arches over the doorway and windows, the hallmark of Gothic design that the 19th-century builders revived.
- Notice the tall, vertical lines of the building, which draw the eye upward as medieval churches do.
- Step back across the square to take in the whole church at once, then come closer to study the stonework and the carved details.
- Think about the contrast with the Cité's ramparts later in your walk: a genuine medieval fortress on one hand, a 19th-century church inspired by the same era on the other.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 20 minutes to look at the outside and the square, a little longer if you can go in.
- Check current opening hours before you plan to enter, as parish churches can close or hold services. If you go inside, keep your voice low and dress modestly.
- Daylight in the morning or late afternoon shows the stonework best and is a calm time to visit.
- Pair it with the Cité de Carcassonne, the main medieval sight, so that the two buildings can be compared on the same day.
See it on a quest
Medieval Carcassonne: Ghosts of The Citadel is a good way to see this church. You reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot, so you look at the building rather than just pass it. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
