O Roman Thermae of Maximinus
The Roman Thermae of Maximinus are the remains of a public bath complex from the 2nd century CE, set in the middle of modern Braga in northern Portugal. Braga was the Roman town of Bracara Augusta, and this fenced archaeological site is among the most significant traces of that past. It shows how Romans here washed, exercised and met each other.
The story behind it
The baths were found in the heart of the city and excavated over several years, which is a big reason the remains are so well preserved. The building was rectangular and held several rooms, some cold and some heated, so bathers moved from one temperature to another. Think of it as the gym and spa of its day, a place for exercise, bathing and socialising as much as for getting clean.
The area around the baths is known as Alto da Cividade, and the excavations also brought to light a Roman theatre close by. Together they hint at how much of Roman Bracara Augusta still lies under the streets of today's Braga.
What to look for
- The rectangular outline of the complex, which lets you read the plan of the building even from outside the fence.
- The division into separate rooms, a reminder that bathers moved between cold and hot spaces rather than using a single pool.
- The contrast between the ancient stonework and the modern apartment blocks and streets pressing in around it.
- Any information panels at the site, which help you match the foundations to the rooms they once formed.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes to walk around the site and read the signs, longer if you like archaeology.
- The site is free to visit, but check current opening hours and which parts can be entered before you go.
- Soft morning or late afternoon light is kinder for photos than the harsh midday sun.
- Combine it with a stroll through the old centre, since Braga's other main sights are within walking distance.
See it on a quest
The baths are one stop on Roman Heritage of Braga: Shadow of the Roman Empire, a self-guided walk through the Roman side of the city. You reach the site on foot as part of a longer route, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It suits anyone who would rather discover Roman Braga at their own pace than read a plaque and move on. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like, with no guide and no set departure time.
