Over Järnpojken - Boy watching the moon

Järnpojken, the Iron Boy, also known as Boy watching the moon, is a tiny sculpture tucked behind the Finnish Church in Gamla stan, Stockholm. At about 15 centimetres tall, it is often called the smallest statue in Sweden, and it is certainly one of the most affectionately cared for. People come to stroke its head for luck and to see what strangers have left beside it.

The story behind it

The little figure is the work of the sculptor Liss Eriksson. It sits quietly with its head tilted up towards the moon, in a corner that most people walk straight past. That is part of its appeal: you have to know it is there.

The tradition says that if you rub the boy's head, or leave him a small gift, you will have good luck for the next year. Locals and visitors have taken this to heart. Over the years the offerings have included knitted hats and scarves in winter, coins from many countries, flowers, sweets, apples, tiny umbrellas, toys and love letters, so the boy rarely looks the same two days running.

What to look for

  • Look low: the figure is only about 15 centimetres high, so scan the ground and the stonework near the Finnish Church rather than at eye level.
  • Notice the boy's pose, with his head tilted up towards the moon, which gives the sculpture its second name.
  • Check what he is wearing or what has been left beside him, from a knitted hat in cold weather to coins, flowers or a handwritten note.
  • Take in the setting itself, a calm corner behind the Finnish Church that feels far from the busier lanes of the old town.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow five to ten minutes for the statue itself, and more if you want to linger around the church and the surrounding streets.
  • The address is Trädgårdsgatan 2. The sculpture is outdoors, but check current access and opening hours for the churchyard area before you go.
  • Early morning or early evening is usually the calmest time, when you can take a proper look without a crowd around him.
  • Gamla stan is on your doorstep, so the Royal Palace and the old town lanes are an easy walk from here. Bring a coin or a small token if you want to join the tradition.
