Over Lijnbaan
Lijnbaan is a pedestrian shopping street in the centre of Rotterdam, opened in 1953 as part of the city's rebuilding after the Second World War. It is widely described as one of the first purpose-built car-free shopping streets in Europe, and it still shows how postwar planners imagined everyday city life.
The story behind it
Rotterdam's old centre was largely destroyed in the German bombing of May 1940, and the city chose to rebuild it as something new rather than copy what was lost. Lijnbaan became the showpiece of that thinking: a street for walking and shopping, with the traffic kept away. It was designed by the architects Van den Broek and Bakema, and the low buildings, covered walkways and open sightlines were meant to make shopping a calm, social outing.
The name is older than the street. A lijnbaan is a ropewalk, a long strip where rope for ships was twisted, and the name points back to Rotterdam's long life as a port. The street you see today, though, belongs to the reconstruction era, which is why it feels so different from the historic canal towns elsewhere in the Netherlands.
What to look for
- The long, low rows of shopfronts with apartments above show the clean, modernist grid that defined Rotterdam's postwar centre.
- Covered walkways along the shops give shelter from the weather and are part of the original idea of a comfortable street for pedestrians.
- Planters, benches and public art along the walking area show how the street was meant to be a place to linger, not just pass through.
- Look at how the street meets the surrounding blocks, and notice how different the scale and layout feel from older parts of the city.
Tips for your visit
- Plan 20 to 30 minutes to walk the street and take in the architecture, longer if you want to shop or stop for coffee.
- Mornings are quieter for photos and for seeing the building lines clearly; afternoons and Saturdays are lively and busy.
- The street is open air and free to walk, but individual shops and cafes keep their own hours, so check current opening hours.
- Other central sights are close by, including the Koopgoot shopping passage, the Markthal and the Cube Houses, so it pairs well with a wider walk through the centre.
See it on a quest
You can reach Lijnbaan on foot as one stop of Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Centrum, Rotterdam, a murder mystery walk through the city centre. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look closely at the street instead of just walking through it. You start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join, and one ticket covers the whole group.
