We will be hunting for trolls in Østmarka, the forest east of Oslo.

The Christmas troll is a subspecies of the common Norwegian forest troll. These trolls live close to cities and can be lured with an offering of Christmas ornaments.

- At least one Christmas ornament that can withstand the elements. 
- Bad Weather: Suitable clothing and good shoes as the forest gets slippery.
- Good weather: A water bottle, the uphill part of the route can get exhausting.

Families and friends who like the idea of tracking trolls through Østmarka get a 1.7 km forest walk past Ekorntoppen and Solbergvannet, with puzzles along the way and a Christmas ornament to leave as an offering. It is free and takes around 90 minutes. Anyone wary of an uphill climb on paths that turn slippery, or hoping to go after dark, should pick a city-centre walk.

Is there a troll tour in Oslo?
Yes. This is a self-guided troll hunt in Østmarka, the forest east of Oslo, played on your phone. The app leads you from stop to stop, tells the story of each place and sets puzzles in what you see. There is no guide, and it is free to play.
Where does the troll hunt start and finish?
It starts at Solbergliveien p-plass and runs through Sagaflisa, Brattbakken, a picnic bench, Ekorntoppen, Juletreet, Solbergvannet and Pieufjellet before finishing at the final stop, The End. It does not return to the start, and the route covers about 1.7 km.
How long does it take and what should we bring?
Plan on around 90 minutes, walking and puzzles included. Bring at least one Christmas ornament that can withstand the elements to lure the trolls. In bad weather wear suitable clothing and good shoes, and on warm days carry a water bottle for the uphill part of the route.
Can we play as a family or group, and do we need to book?
Yes. It is free to play, so families and groups can simply go together. There is no time slot to book and no group to join: start whenever you like, and you can pause and continue later. Children should be able to manage an uphill forest walk.
Can we play in the evening or in the rain?
Playing at night is not recommended. The whole route is outdoors in the forest, so in wet weather you can still go, but wear suitable clothing and good shoes, as the paths get slippery.
