The Proveniershof is a quiet courtyard (hofje) off the Grote Houtstraat in Haarlem, one of the busiest shopping streets in the city centre. The story behind it

Many Haarlem courtyards were founded by a guild, a church or a wealthy benefactor. The Proveniershof was not. It takes its name from a proveniershuis that stood on this spot until 1866. A proveniershuis was a kind of residential home where people paid for a place in old age, with board and lodging provided in return.

The old house is long gone, and apartments now occupy the former proveniershuis. The courtyard shape remains, so the name is a small record of how Haarlem looked after its older residents. That makes it different from the grander almshouses elsewhere in the city.

• Notice the entrance from the Grote Houtstraat and how quickly the atmosphere changes between the busy street and the calm courtyard.
