Illini Union, Champaign, Bezoekersgids & wat te doen in de buurt

The Illini Union is the student union of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, standing on Green Street in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana. It is the campus meeting place, a working building where students eat, study, shop and gather, and a good first stop for anyone wanting to understand the university and the town around it.

The story behind it

A student union is meant to be the living room of a campus, and the Illini Union has played that part for generations of Illinois students. The building dates from the early 1940s. Over the decades it has grown into a hub that holds dining spots, meeting rooms, a bookstore, event space and a hotel, all under one roof.

Its place on Green Street matters as much as its age. This is the edge of the university, where campus life meets the downtown streets of Champaign and Urbana, so the building works as a natural doorway between the two.

What to look for

• Take in the brick exterior as a whole from the street, and notice how its formal, traditional look sits among the campus buildings around it.
• Watch the flow of people at the entrances, which shows how much daily student life passes through the building.
• Look at the notice boards and displays inside, which show what is going on around campus at any given moment.
• Glance up and down Green Street, one of the main routes where campus and town meet, and note how the character of the street changes as you walk.

Tips for your visit

• Allow 20 to 30 minutes for a look around the outside and the public areas, longer if you stop for coffee or a meal.
• The building is a working student centre, so check current opening hours and which areas are open to visitors before you go.
• Quieter times, such as weekend mornings, are good for a relaxed look. On weekdays during term it is at its liveliest.
• The campus and the streets of downtown Champaign and Urbana are close by on foot, so combine the Union with a longer stroll.

See it on a quest

The Illini Union is one stop on Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Champaign, a self-guided mystery walk through the area. You reach the building on foot as part of a longer route, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot, so you look at the building more closely than a quick photo allows. A single ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no set departure time.
