Over The Church of ‘St. George The Victorious’

The Church of St. George the Victorious is an Orthodox church in the centre of Belogradchik, Bulgaria, on ul. Anton Strashimir. Nobody knows for certain who built it or when, and the only firm date was found by accident on a stone under fallen plaster. It is still the focus of a lively local feast every May.

The story behind it

Very little about the church's history has survived. No archive records say when or by whom it was built, and nobody can explain why it carries the name of St. George, the saint associated with farmers and shepherds. What we do have comes from a lucky accident: years ago, damp made the plaster on part of a wall fall away, and underneath was a stone inscribed with the year 1868. It is the first and only clue to the church's age. The area around it was tidied up after a recent renovation.

The church's big day is May 6, St. George's Day, which in Bulgaria is also the day of bravery and the official celebration of the Bulgarian army. Locals mark it with a lamb sacrifice and a festive table. Older customs tied to the day, as the story is told, included bathing in the morning dew, drinking it or walking barefoot through it.

What to look for

  • The walls themselves, where the stone dated 1868 was uncovered, a reminder that the building's age was only discovered by chance.
  • The renovated surroundings of the church, which now make a pleasant, calm corner of the town centre.
  • The dedication to St. George, the patron of shepherds and farmers, which fits a town set among fields and hills.
  • Signs of the feast on and around May 6, when the church becomes the centre of a community celebration.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan about 15 to 20 minutes for the church and its surroundings, longer if you want to sit quietly nearby.
  • It is a working church, so dress modestly and keep your voice low. Whether you can go inside depends on the day, so check current opening hours or ask locally.
  • Visit in the morning or late afternoon, when the town is quiet and the light is softer.
  • If you are in Belogradchik around May 6, expect a festive atmosphere with food and gatherings linked to St. George's Day.
