The Herald of Freedom Monument (Vestitelyat na svobodata) stands on a rocky height above Vratsa, a town in northwest Bulgaria. It honours the soldier who, according to local tradition, announced the end of Ottoman rule in the town in 1877, and it gives one of the best viewpoints over Vratsa.

The story behind it

Vratsa was freed from Ottoman rule during the Russo-Turkish Liberation War of 1877 and 1878, after some five centuries of subordination. Local legend says a Russian cavalry trumpeter rode up onto the rock above the town on a white horse and sounded his trumpet to end the fighting. His call told the people of Vratsa that the first day of freedom had come.

The story goes on that church bells rang out and townspeople poured into the streets and squares. They greeted the liberators with flowers, bread and salt, the traditional welcome for honoured guests. The monument turns that single moment into a lasting symbol, and the street that climbs to it is named after the herald.
