À propos Carlton Gardens

Carlton Gardens is a Victorian-era public park on the northern edge of central Melbourne, Australia. It surrounds the Royal Exhibition Building, and together they are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a free place to walk, with tree-lined paths, a fountain and one of the city's grandest 19th-century buildings.

The story behind it

The gardens were laid out in the 1800s as the setting for great international exhibitions, which were a way for Melbourne to show off its wealth and ambition during the gold-rush years. The Royal Exhibition Building, designed by architect Joseph Reed, was finished for the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition. It hosted another large exhibition in 1888.

The building also has a place in national history. In 1901, soon after Federation, the first Parliament of Australia was opened here, and it met in the building for a time. In the 20th century the site was used for many purposes, and the building was later restored. It earned World Heritage status in 2004 as a surviving example of a 19th-century exhibition hall. The modern Melbourne Museum opened in the gardens in 2000.

What to look for

  • The great dome of the Royal Exhibition Building, which rises above the trees and is best seen from the main paths on the southern side.
  • The mix of Victorian-era garden design, with long avenues of mature trees, lawns and winding paths.
  • The ornamental fountain and the small lake, which are good places to pause and look back at the building.
  • The contrast between the 19th-century exhibition hall and the modern Melbourne Museum next to it.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about an hour to stroll the gardens and look at the building from the outside. Add more time if you plan to visit the museum.
  • The gardens are open to walk through. The Royal Exhibition Building is usually entered on a tour or for an event, so check current opening hours and tour options before you go.
  • Morning and late afternoon light is gentle on the facade, and the paths are quieter outside the middle of the day.
  • Lygon Street, with its cafes and restaurants, and the Carlton streets with their terrace houses are a short walk away, so it is easy to combine the gardens with a wander through the neighbourhood.
