Affleck & Brown started as a drapery business in the 1860s on Oldham Street and grew into a full department store occupying an entire city block. Post-WWII decline and changing shopping patterns led to closure in 1973. In 1982, James and Elaine Walsh reopened it as Affleck's Palace with a revolutionary business model: affordable rent with no long-term contracts, operating on week-by-week license agreements. This allowed entrepreneurs and artists to start businesses without significant capital investment, deliberately creating a safe space for creative professionals. During the 1980s-1990s, despite Manchester's economic hardship, Affleck's became the epicenter of subculture. The maze-like layout and bohemian atmosphere attracted fashion seekers during the "Madchester Summer of Love," music fans at the legendary Eastern Bloc record shop, alternative communities of goths and punks, and cultural activists. Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and Inspiral Carpets dominated the scene; Affleck's was THE place for the appropriate fashion and music. Today, over 50 independent shops and stalls fill four labyrinthian floors, selling vintage and contemporary clothing, records and posters, crystals and alternative wellness products, handmade crafts and niche goods. For 40 years, Affleck's has served as a mirror to Manchester's subcultures, simultaneously dressing them, educating them, and providing safe community space.
