À propos Parroquia Santiago Apóstol Málaga
The Church of Santiago Apóstol (Parroquia Santiago Apóstol) on Calle Granada in Malaga is one of the oldest churches in the city, founded in the late 15th century after the Christian conquest of 1487. It is best known as the church where Pablo Picasso was baptized as a baby, and it sits a short walk from the Picasso Museum in the old town.
The story behind it
Malaga passed into Christian hands in 1487, and Santiago was one of the first churches to rise in the new order. It was built on the site of an earlier mosque, a common pattern in cities across southern Spain at the time. The result is a church that carries layers of the city's history, with Gothic-Mudejar roots and later Baroque additions.
Its most famous parishioner arrived much later. Picasso was born in Malaga in October 1881 and was baptized here about two weeks afterwards. His father, José Ruiz Blasco, taught at the nearby San Telmo School of Fine Arts, so art was part of the household from the start. The church is also home to a brotherhood devoted to Jesus the Rich (Jesús el Rico), whose Holy Week tradition of freeing a prisoner each year is tied to a privilege granted in the 18th century under King Charles III.
What to look for
- The brick bell tower in Mudejar style is the part of the church that most clearly shows its medieval roots.
- The main doorway and facade show how Gothic, Mudejar and Baroque elements were layered over several centuries.
- Inside, look for the chapel of Jesus the Rich, the image at the heart of the brotherhood and its Holy Week procession.
- The font area is worth a pause, as this is where Picasso was baptized in 1881.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the church itself, longer if you pair it with the Picasso Museum nearby.
- It is a working parish church, so check current opening hours and expect limited access during services.
- Dress respectfully and keep your voice low if you go inside.
- Visit in the morning for softer light on the tower and quieter streets, then continue through the old town on foot.
