À propos Dennis Severs' House

Dennis Severs' House at 18 Folgate Street in Spitalfields, London, is an 18th-century terraced house that its last private owner turned into a living work of art. Instead of a conventional museum, it is a series of rooms staged as if a family of Huguenot silk weavers had just stepped out of them. It is one of the most unusual places to visit in East London.

The story behind it

Spitalfields was home to many French Huguenots, Protestant refugees who settled here and became master silk weavers and designers. They dominated the trade in their day, and their tall Georgian houses had large windows to let in light for work at the loom. When the trade declined in the early 19th century, the district declined with it, and many grand houses were divided into cramped lodgings.

Dennis Severs, an artist, bought number 18 when it was in poor repair and lived in it from the 1970s until the late 1990s. He restored it one room at a time, not as a period showpiece but as a stage for an imagined household of weavers, whom he invented. Each room evokes a different moment in the life of that family, so the house feels occupied rather than preserved.

Visits are designed to protect the illusion. They are led by candlelight and in silence, so you are left to notice the details and piece together the story yourself.

What to look for

  • The candlelit rooms, where the flicker of flame and the smell of the house make you feel you have just missed the occupants.
  • The tall windows, which recall the way weavers' houses were built to bring in as much daylight as possible.
  • Small signs of daily life, such as half-finished meals and rumpled beds, which suggest the family has only just left the room.
  • The plain brick Georgian front on Folgate Street, which gives little hint of the theatrical interior behind it.

Tips for your visit

  • Check current opening hours and booking requirements before you go, as visits are usually arranged in set sessions.
  • Expect to spend around an hour inside, moving quietly from room to room.
  • Go with a slow, observant mood: the house rewards patience more than a quick look.
  • Spitalfields Market, Christ Church Spitalfields and Brick Lane are all a short walk away, so it fits easily into a morning or afternoon in the area.
