À propos Market House

The Market House is a brick landmark from 1832 standing in the middle of Market Square in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where several streets meet. It served as a market and civic building, and it is also tied to the sale of enslaved people, a history Fayetteville continues to debate. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1973.

The story behind it

A great fire swept through Fayetteville in 1831 and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses, along with the old State House that stood on this spot. The State House mattered: in 1789 Fayetteville hosted the state convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution, and the General Assembly session that chartered the University of North Carolina. The Market House was built on the same ground the following year, in 1832.

The building served the town as a market and a place for civic life, but it was also a site where enslaved people were sold. That history has shaped how people see it today. Union troops occupied Fayetteville in 1865, and in 2020 renewed debate over the building's legacy led the city to drop it from its official logo. During protests on May 30, 2020, people tried to set it on fire, and the flames were put out quickly. It remains the centre of the city, and a place where its past is openly discussed.

What to look for

  • The open arches on the ground floor, where the market once operated, give the building its distinctive look.
  • The clock tower and cupola on top rise above the square and are visible from the surrounding streets.
  • The four streets meeting at the square circle the building, so you can walk all the way around it and see every side.
  • On Person Street, look up at the old Sedberry-MacKethan Drug Store, a Second Empire building with a steep mansard roof and pedimented dormers.

Tips for your visit

  • Give yourself 20 to 30 minutes to walk around the building and read about its history, longer if you also explore the streets around it.
  • Morning or late afternoon light is kind to the brick, and the square is quieter before the busiest part of the day.
  • The surrounding blocks form the Market House Square Historic District, with storefronts mostly rebuilt after the 1831 fire, so plan to look at more than the main building.
  • You can see the exterior freely at any time, but check current opening hours and access if you want to go inside.
