À propos Revelin

Revelin is a 16th-century fortress just outside the eastern entrance to the old town of Dubrovnik, standing apart from the main city walls near Ploče Gate. It was built to protect the weakest point of the defences, the gate, and it made the eastern side of the city the strongest. Today it is a handy first stop for anyone walking into the old town from the harbor side.

The story behind it

Dubrovnik's defences grew in response to the Ottoman threat in the 15th and 16th centuries. City gates were always the vulnerable spots in any wall, so the Republic wanted extra protection for Ploče Gate. The answer was a separate fortress in front of it, the Revelin, linked to the gate by a bridge.

The Senate hired Antonio Ferramolino, an Italian engineer with experience building fortresses, to design it. Construction took around eleven years in the 16th century. The result worked as intended: with the Revelin in place, the eastern stretch of Dubrovnik's fortifications became its strongest. In recent years the city's medieval look has also made it a draw for Game of Thrones fans, since Dubrovnik stands in for King's Landing in the series.

What to look for

  • The thick stone walls of the fortress, which show how seriously the city took the defence of its gates.
  • The bridge that leads toward Ploče Gate, a reminder that the Revelin was a detached outwork rather than part of the main wall.
  • The way the fortress sits separately from the city walls, creating a layered approach that any attacker would have had to cross.
  • The view toward the old harbor and the Adriatic, which shows why this corner of the city needed guarding.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about 15 to 30 minutes to look around the outside and take in the views, longer if you add the nearby harbor.
  • Go early in the morning or later in the evening, when the old town is quieter and the stone looks best in softer light.
  • Access to the inside can depend on events and the season, so check current opening hours and access before you plan around it.
  • Ploče Gate and the old harbor are right beside it, so it fits easily into a walk that continues into the old town.

See it on a quest

The Dubrovnik - Game of Thrones quest passes the Revelin as one stop on a longer self-guided walk through the area. You reach it on foot, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a good fit if you want the story of the fortress together with the look of the city that fans know from the series. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like, with no guide and no set departure time.
