À propos St Edmundsbury Cathedral
St Edmundsbury Cathedral stands on Angel Hill in Bury Saint Edmunds, Suffolk. It began as a parish church and has served as a cathedral since the early twentieth century. It is one of the main sights in the town centre, close to the ruins of the great medieval abbey.
The story behind it
The building was once the parish church of St James. Over the centuries it was rebuilt, renovated and extended, so what you see today is a layered building rather than one single design. It became the cathedral of the new diocese in 1914, just over a century ago.
Its position tells part of the story. The cathedral sits beside the site of the abbey that made Bury a place of pilgrimage, and the town takes its name from St Edmund, the Anglo-Saxon king of East Anglia. Walking between the cathedral and the abbey grounds is a good way to see how the medieval town was laid out.
What to look for
- Look at the exterior as a whole and notice how the older church and the later additions meet, which shows how often the building has been extended.
- Find the tall tower, a twenty-first century addition that adds a Gothic silhouette to the town skyline.
- Step back across the green to see the cathedral together with the Norman Tower, the separate medieval gatehouse tower close by.
- Inside, take in the length of the nave and the sense of scale, then think about how much larger the abbey church once was.
Tips for your visit
- The cathedral is open to visitors during the week, but check current opening hours before you go, as services and events can change access.
- Allow 30 to 45 minutes to go inside and look around properly, and a little longer if you want to pair it with the abbey grounds.
- The abbey ruins and the Abbey Gardens are a short walk away, so the cathedral fits well into a half-day in the town centre.
- Morning or late afternoon light is kind to the exterior, and the green in front is a pleasant spot to pause.
See it on a quest
The Medieval Mayhem: Bury St Edmunds Walking Tour & Escape Game brings you to the cathedral on foot as one stop on a longer route through the town. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the buildings more closely than you would on a casual stroll. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join. One ticket covers the whole group. The creators suggest pausing the game to go inside, and the game ends close by, so you can return afterwards for a longer look.
