À propos BASILICA DI SANT'ALESSANDRO

The Basilica di Sant'Alessandro in Colonna is a church in Bergamo dedicated to Saint Alexander, the city's patron saint. It is known for the lone column out front, which marks the place where tradition says he was beheaded. It is a good stop for anyone curious about how Bergamo remembers its saint.

The story behind it

Alexander is Bergamo's patron saint, a martyr whose death is placed by tradition on this very spot. The column in front of the church is the marker. Local tradition holds that the saint was beheaded where the pillar now stands, and the church takes its name "in Colonna" from it.

The column you see today was put back together in 1618 from fragments of stone that came from ancient Roman monuments. That makes it a patchwork of older material, and a link to the much older church of the saint that once stood in this area. Inside, the chapels and the sacristy hold works of art, among them a Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Lorenzo Lotto, according to the route notes.

What to look for

  • The solitary column in front of the church, built from reused pieces of Roman stone, is the clearest sign of the saint's legend.
  • Look closely at the column's stone and see how the different fragments have been fitted together.
  • The church itself is dedicated to Saint Alexander, so look for images of the saint inside and on the altars.
  • The Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Lorenzo Lotto is worth seeking out in the chapels or sacristy, if they are open to visitors.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about 15 to 30 minutes: enough to look at the column and the facade, and to step inside if the church is open.
  • Check current opening hours before you go, as access to churches and to the sacristy can vary, and respect any services in progress.
  • Morning or late afternoon light is kind to the facade and makes the column easier to photograph.
  • There is a fountain nearby where you can refill a water bottle, handy on a warm day of walking.

See it on a quest

Atalanta’s Golden Challenge in Bergamo brings you to the basilica on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area. As you arrive, the app tells you about the place in front of you, and then you solve a puzzle on the spot, so you look at the column and the facade rather than walking past. You start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join. One ticket covers the whole group.
