The Stadtwall, or city walls of Augsburg, are remnants of medieval fortifications that protected one of Germany's oldest cities. Founded in 15 BC by the Romans as Augusta Vindelicorum and named after Emperor Augustus, Augsburg boasts layers of history visible in its surviving walls. These walls date from various periods of expansion as the city grew and defended itself against invaders. Today, you can walk along sections of the Stadtwall and imagine the centuries of history they have witnessed, from Roman times through the medieval period and beyond.
