Acerca de Town Pump
The Town Pump is a stop in the Market Place of Southwold, the Suffolk seaside town on England's east coast. It sits at the heart of the old town centre, where centuries of fishing, trade and seaside holidays shaped the streets around it. It makes an easy, rewarding place to pause while you explore Southwold on foot.
The story behind it
Southwold's rise began in the late Middle Ages. The town received its charter in 1489, which made it a free borough. That status let it run its own affairs and hold fairs, among them the annual Trinity Fair. A market square like this one was the natural place for that kind of trading life.
Fishing was the backbone of the local economy for a very long time, with herring, cod and sprat all part of the catch. The herring trade faded over the centuries. An attempt to revive it in the early 1900s was cut short by the world wars and never fully recovered. By then Southwold had found another future as a holiday town, popular with visitors in the Georgian and Victorian eras, and that appeal has lasted to this day. Amber is another local trade of note, and the Amber Shop and Museum is just across from the Town Pump.
What to look for
- Look across from the Town Pump to find the Amber Shop and Museum, a good reminder of how amber became part of Southwold's character.
- Take in the Market Place itself, and picture it as a setting for trading and fairs after the town gained its charter.
- Notice how the compact streets around you suit a small trading and fishing town that later grew into a seaside resort.
- Watch for the mix of old buildings and traditional shopfronts that shows how the town has served both locals and holidaymakers.
Tips for your visit
- Allow ten to fifteen minutes here, longer if you step into the Amber Shop and Museum opposite (check current opening hours).
- Morning is usually calmer, while the late afternoon light is pleasant for a stroll around the Market Place.
- You are in the middle of the old town, so shops, cafes and the other sights of Southwold are within easy walking distance.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as the best way to enjoy the area is to wander on foot rather than drive between stops.
