Acerca de The Sofia University Garden

The Sofia University Garden is the green forecourt in front of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" in the centre of Sofia, Bulgaria. It sits beside the oldest higher education institution in the country and works as a shaded pause on one of the capital's busiest walking routes. If you are exploring downtown Sofia, it is an easy and pleasant place to stop.

The story behind it

The garden takes its character from the university behind it. The institution began on 1 October 1888 as the Higher Pedagogical Courses, only ten years after Bulgaria's liberation, and it grew into the country's leading academic and research centre. It carries the name of Saint Clement of Ohrid, the medieval scholar and writer who worked among the early disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius and helped spread Slavic literacy.

For generations of Sofia students the lawns and paths in front of the main building have been a meeting point between lectures. Many Bulgarian scientists, writers and public figures studied here, which is why locals treat this corner of the city as a place with real weight in the national story.

What to look for

  • The neoclassical main building of the university, with its columned central entrance, is the centrepiece of the whole square and worth a slow look from the garden.
  • The statues of the benefactors Evlogi and Hristo Georgiev stand in front of the university and recall the people whose generosity supported Bulgarian education.
  • Students sitting on the benches and crossing the paths between classes show you that this is a living campus and not just a monument.
  • The wide boulevard around the garden, with its mix of historic buildings, gives a good sense of how central this spot is to the city.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan 15 to 30 minutes for the garden and a look at the university facade, longer if you like to people-watch on a bench.
  • Morning and late afternoon are pleasant for photos, when the light falls softly on the building and the garden is not too hot in summer.
  • The garden is an open public space, but the university is a working institution, so check whether visitors may go inside before you try.
  • Many of Sofia's central sights are within an easy walk, so combine the garden with a stroll along the nearby boulevards and parks.

See it on a quest

The garden is one stop on Sofia's Hidden Gems: Sofia Obscura, a self-guided walk through lesser-known corners of the city. You reach the place on foot as part of a longer route, the app tells you about it as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is right in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join.
