Acerca de Praza de Cervantes
Praza de Cervantes is a small square in the old town of Santiago de Compostela, a short walk from the cathedral. For centuries it was a place where people gathered to hear news and to trade, and its changing names still record that history. It is an easy stop that tells you a lot about everyday medieval life in the city.
The story behind it
In the 12th century this square was an important meeting place. The town crier stood here to announce the messages and orders of the Archbishop to the people. That is the origin of the name of the nearby street Preguntoiro, which refers to the questioner.
Later the square became a market place and was known as Praza do Campo, the rural square. The church of San Bieito do Campo takes its name from that older title. When the market moved away in the late 19th century, the square was renamed Praza de Cervantes after the bust of the writer Miguel de Cervantes placed at its centre.
What to look for
- The bust of Cervantes in the middle of the square, which gave the place its present name.
- The church of San Bieito do Campo, whose name preserves the memory of the old market square.
- The way the square opens out suddenly from the narrow lanes around it, which helps you imagine crowds gathering to hear the Archbishop's announcements.
- The name of the street Preguntoiro as you arrive or leave, a small linguistic clue to the town crier's role.
Tips for your visit
- Ten to fifteen minutes is enough to see the square itself, longer if you want to sit and watch the life of the old town pass.
- Early morning and evening are the quietest times, when the lanes around the cathedral are less busy.
- The square is outdoors and free to enter. If you want to see inside the church, check current opening hours first, as it may not always be open to visitors.
- The cathedral and the main streets of the old town are close by, so it fits easily into a longer walk on foot.
See it on a quest
The quest Old Town Santiago: A Stroll Through History passes through this square as one stop on a longer route through the old town. You walk there on foot, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a pleasant way to connect the square with the streets and stories around it. The quest is paid, and one ticket covers the whole group.
