Acerca de Sayles Hall
Sayles Hall is a Romanesque Revival building on the Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island. It was built in the early 1880s as a memorial gift and is still one of the grandest gathering spaces on College Hill. If you are exploring Providence on foot, it is an easy stop that shows how much care went into the university's early buildings.
The story behind it
Sayles Hall was designed by the architect Alpheus C. Morse and paid for by the Providence businessman William Francis Sayles, who gave it in memory of his son. It opened as a large hall for university assemblies, lectures and ceremonies, and that role has carried on for well over a century.
The building reflects the confidence of Providence in the late nineteenth century, when the city's industrial wealth went into schools, churches and public halls. Its heavy masonry and rounded arches were a popular style for institutional buildings of the period.
What to look for
- Notice the rounded arches and solid stonework outside, which are typical of the Romanesque Revival style.
- Look at how the building sits among its neighbours on campus, and compare its heavy, sturdy look with the lighter buildings nearby.
- If you can see the interior, take in the sheer scale of the main hall, which was built to hold a crowd for university occasions.
- Step back across the lawn for a view of the whole facade, which is easier to appreciate from a distance than from the door.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the building itself, and more if you want to wander the surrounding campus.
- Morning or late afternoon gives softer light on the facade and quieter paths on College Hill.
- Sayles Hall is a working university building, so interior access depends on events and the academic calendar. Check current access before you plan to go in.
- The area is compact and walkable, so you can combine it with the rest of the Brown campus and the nearby streets of College Hill.
