Acerca de Euphrasian Basilica
The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, Croatia, is a 6th-century church famed for its Byzantine mosaics and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. It is the best-preserved early Christian complex in Croatia, and it has stood at the heart of Poreč's old town for around fifteen centuries.
The story behind it
Christians in Poreč worshipped on this spot as early as the 4th century, and traces of those earlier buildings still lie beside and beneath the present church. The basilica you see today was raised in the mid-6th century under Bishop Euphrasius, who looked to the Byzantine world for inspiration and craftsmen. His name is tied to the building to this day.
The complex is more than a single church. It includes the basilica, an atrium, a baptistery, a bishop's palace and the remains of earlier early Christian structures. Tradition holds that the relics of Saint Maurus, the patron saint of Poreč, are kept in the basilica, which links the church to the identity of the town itself.
What to look for
- The glittering apse mosaics, where figures stand against a golden background and the colours seem to shift as the light changes.
- Bishop Euphrasius himself, shown in the mosaics holding a model of the church, with his name appearing in the inscriptions.
- The atrium and the baptistery at the front of the church, which show how much more there is to the complex than the nave.
- The layers of older buildings, whose remains reveal how the site grew from an early house of prayer into a grand basilica.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 45 minutes to an hour to look properly at the mosaics and the surrounding buildings.
- Go early in the day or later in the afternoon, when the old town is quieter and the light inside is gentle.
- You can go inside, but it is an active place of worship, so dress modestly and keep your voice low. Check current opening hours and entry details before you go.
- The basilica sits in the old town, so the streets, squares and waterfront of Poreč are all within a short walk.
