Acerca de Fremantle Prison
Fremantle Prison is a World Heritage-listed convict site on The Terrace in Fremantle, part of greater Perth, Western Australia. Convicts built it in the 1850s, and it stayed in use as a prison until 1991. That makes it one of the best preserved reminders of how the colony was built and how its justice system worked.
The story behind it
Between 1850 and 1868, 9,721 convicts were transported to Western Australia. Their labour raised the Convict Establishment itself: the cell ranges, the perimeter walls, the gatehouse and the yards. They also built much of the public infrastructure of the district, including roads, bridges and cottages for the warders. In other words, the prisoners built the place that would hold them.
The prison outlived the convict era by a long way. The gallows were built in 1888 and remained in use until 1964, and the gates did not close until 1991. That recent past gives the site its weight. It is not a distant colonial relic but a working institution that sits within living memory, and the paperwork, routines and walls that ran it are still there to see.
What to look for
- The gatehouse and the high perimeter walls show how completely the site was designed to control movement in and out.
- The long ranges of small cells make the scale of daily life inside easy to grasp.
- The gallows are a plain and sobering reminder that the prison carried out executions until 1964.
- The tool marks and stonework in the walls and yards are the physical record of convict labour.
Tips for your visit
- Allow at least a couple of hours if you plan to go inside, and check current opening hours and booking options before you set out.
- The prison stands on high ground above Fremantle, so the approach on foot gives a good sense of how it dominated the town.
- Fremantle is compact and easy to walk, so you can pair the prison with the harbour, the markets and the old streets around it in one outing.
- Go earlier in the day if you can, when the light on the limestone is soft and the streets are quieter.
See it on a quest
You can reach the prison on foot as one stop of The Haunting File: Perth - Ghosts that Built Fremantle, a self-guided walk through the area with a ghostly theme. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you, so you look at the walls and streets more closely than you would on a quick visit. You start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join, and one ticket covers the whole group.
