Acerca de Fremantle Markets
Fremantle Markets is a Victorian-era covered market on the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street in Fremantle, the port city at the mouth of the Swan River in the Perth metropolitan area. It opened in 1897 and is still a working market, with stalls of food, produce and crafts under one roof. It is a rare place in the district that still does what it was built to do.
The story behind it
The markets opened in 1897 as brick halls under an iron roof, built for the growers, grocers, fishmongers and flower-sellers who kept a growing port town fed. Their work was the kind that rarely gets a name on a plaque. Stallholders often kept the same pitch for years, and they are remembered mostly by the families who shopped with them across generations.
That ordinary, unrecorded labour is part of what makes the building special in a district better known for its gaols and old places of death. Local lore speaks of a long-serving stallholder who never quite left the market. She is a figure of local storytelling rather than a documented individual, but she stands for the many people who spent their lives here. Here the memory is of a life lived rather than a life lost.
What to look for
- The brick walls and iron roof of the main halls show the building's late nineteenth-century character, even with modern stalls inside.
- The mix of stalls, from fresh produce to handmade goods, shows the market still doing the job it was built for.
- The corner position at South Terrace and Henderson Street makes it easy to see how the market sits within the street grid of old Fremantle.
- Watch how the stallholders work and talk with regulars, which gives a feel for the generations of trading the market has seen.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 45 minutes to an hour to wander the halls, longer if you plan to eat or shop.
- The markets do not open every day, so check current opening hours before you set out.
- Go earlier in the day if you prefer more space to look around, as the aisles can fill up when the market is busiest.
- The cafes of South Terrace and the historic centre of Fremantle are a short walk away, so the market fits easily into a longer stroll.
See it on a quest
You can reach the market on foot as one stop of The Haunting File: Perth - Ghosts that Built Fremantle, a self-guided ghost-themed walk through Fremantle. The app tells you about the market as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the building rather than just pass through it. The route treats the markets as the living, working place among Fremantle's darker sites. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join.
