The story behind it

The Fox opened in 1928 as a lavish movie palace designed by the architects Weeks and Day, with more than 3,000 seats. For its first decades it drew big crowds, but audiences thinned out in the 1960s and the theatre closed in 1965. It reopened only now and then, and the huge hall never earned enough to sustain itself.

By the mid 1970s the building was in bad shape, and the city considered buying it and clearing the site for a parking lot. That plan fell through, and the Fox later gained city landmark status, though it stayed dark for years. The city's Redevelopment Agency bought it in 1996, and a long restoration followed, costing about $75 million. The Fox finally reopened in 2009 with a concert by Social Distortion. Standing outside, it is worth picturing the decades when the marquee was unlit and the seats behind it sat empty.
