Acerca de Yale Center for British Art
The Yale Center for British Art is a museum on Chapel Street in New Haven, Connecticut, holding the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. It was the last building designed by the American architect Louis Kahn, and it is worth a visit for the architecture as much as for the paintings inside.
The story behind it
The collection was given to Yale University by Paul Mellon, a Yale graduate and philanthropist with a long passion for British art, along with funds for a building to house it. The museum opened in 1977. Kahn died in 1974, before it was finished, and colleagues completed the work to his design.
The Center sits directly across the street from another Kahn building, the Yale University Art Gallery, so one block of Chapel Street shows you two phases of his career. The collection runs from the Elizabethan period to the present and includes paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, rare books and manuscripts. Well-known British names such as Hogarth, Gainsborough, Stubbs, Constable and Turner are represented.
What to look for
- The exterior is made of concrete and matte stainless steel panels, which pick up the colour of the sky and change appearance with the weather and the hour.
- Inside, Kahn paired the cool concrete with warm white oak panelling and plain, calm surfaces that let the art take centre stage.
- Look up in the large interior courtyards, where daylight falls from above and gives the building much of its character.
- Along Chapel Street, notice how the ground floor opens to the sidewalk, a deliberate choice by Kahn to connect the museum to the life of the city.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour for a focused look at the highlights, or two hours or more if you like to linger over the galleries.
- General admission has traditionally been free, but check current opening hours and any special exhibition details before you go.
- Natural light is part of the design, so daytime visits show the building and the paintings at their best.
- The Yale University Art Gallery is right across the street, and the rest of the Yale campus and downtown New Haven are a short walk away.
See it on a quest
The Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in New Haven is a good way to take in this part of the city. You reach the Center on foot as one stop on a longer route, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot using what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join.
