Acerca de Moncton City Hall
Moncton City Hall is the seat of municipal government in Moncton, New Brunswick, where the city council meets and civic business is run. It is a working public building rather than a museum, which makes it a good place to see how this bilingual, fast-growing city governs itself.
The story behind it
Moncton's story explains why a city hall matters here. The city takes its name from Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Monckton, a British officer who took part in the capture of Fort Beauséjour in 1755, although a spelling slip along the way turned Monckton into Moncton. It was incorporated as a city in 1890.
Railways shaped the place. Moncton grew around the Intercolonial Railway and its workshops, and this central position in the Maritimes earned it the nickname Hub City. Today it is one of Canada's officially bilingual cities, with English and French both part of daily public life, and the city hall is where that shared identity becomes official policy.
What to look for
- Notice the bilingual signage and notices around the building, a small everyday sign of Moncton's English and French character.
- Look at the flags and civic emblems outside, which tell you which governments and communities the building represents.
- Take in the setting of the building within the surrounding streets and consider how the city grew outward from its railway and river roots.
- Watch the public comings and goings, since a city hall is a place where residents arrive for permits, meetings and local business.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 10 to 15 minutes if you only want to see the exterior and take photographs.
- Daylight on a weekday is the best time, when the area is active. Check current opening hours before you try to go inside, as access to public areas can vary.
- Combine it with a wider walk, since Moncton is easy to explore on foot and has plenty of places within a short distance.
- Wear comfortable shoes and bring a phone with battery, as a self-guided walk uses the app throughout.
See it on a quest
The Oz Escape in Moncton brings you to Moncton City Hall on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the building properly instead of walking past it. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever suits you.
Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Moncton is a good choice if you prefer a darker, more atmospheric tone. You pass the city hall on the way through the streets of Moncton, hear about each stop as you reach it, and solve a puzzle on the spot. There is no guide and no group to join, and one ticket covers your whole group.
