Acerca de Barton Academy

Barton Academy is a Greek Revival school building on Government Street in Mobile, Alabama, with a columned portico and a dome above the roofline. It is named for Willoughby Barton and opened in the 1830s as one of the first public schools in the state, which makes it a landmark of Mobile's downtown and of public education in Alabama.

The story behind it

Barton Academy was built in the years when Mobile was a busy cotton port and its leaders were arguing for schooling that was open to the public rather than reserved for families who could pay. Willoughby Barton, a legislator who pressed for public education, gave the school his name. The building was meant to look like a statement, and it does: a classical temple front set at the head of a broad street.

Greek Revival style was the fashion for civic buildings in the American South at the time. Its columns and clean lines were chosen to suggest learning, order and permanence. The building has kept its role in the city's schooling story ever since, and it still anchors this stretch of Government Street.

What to look for

  • The tall columns of the front portico, which give the building the look of a classical temple.
  • The dome rising above the roof, which is easiest to appreciate from across the street.
  • The symmetry of the facade, with the central entrance framed by balanced wings on either side.
  • The broad Government Street setting, where the school stands among the oaks and older buildings of downtown Mobile.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan on 10 to 15 minutes to take in the exterior and photograph it from a few angles.
  • Morning or late afternoon light is kind to the columns and the dome. Midday sun can flatten the facade.
  • Treat it as an outside stop. It is a school building, so check current opening hours and access rules before expecting to go in.
  • It sits within walking distance of Mobile's historic downtown, so it pairs easily with a stroll to the nearby squares, churches and streets.

See it on a quest

Playing Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Mobile is a good way to see Barton Academy as part of the wider city. You reach it on foot as one stop on a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle in front of what you are looking at. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.

Dorothy’s Quest: The Trials of Oz in Mobile suits families and anyone who likes a lighter, storybook theme. You walk the streets around the school, hear about the places you pass, and work out a puzzle on the spot instead of just glancing at the facade. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
