Acerca de Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière
The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is a late 19th-century church standing on Fourvière Hill in Lyon, France, high above the old town. Its white towers and ornate interior make it one of the best-known sights in the city, and its terrace gives one of the widest views over Lyon's rooftops and rivers.
The story behind it
Fourvière Hill is where Lyon began. The Romans founded Lugdunum here, and a forum stood on the hill. One popular explanation links the name Fourvière to the Latin forum vetus, meaning old forum. The hill is nicknamed the praying hill, a nod to the many religious buildings on its slopes. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was begun here in the 12th century.
In the 17th century Lyon was struck by the plague, and the city turned to the Virgin for protection. A procession was held at the chapel, and the tradition has continued year after year. The large basilica was built in the later 19th century, next to the old chapel, as a thanksgiving for the city's protection. It is a landmark you can see from much of Lyon.
What to look for
- The four towers and the white stone facade, which look quite different from the older churches of the old town below.
- The richly decorated interior, with colourful mosaics and gilded details covering the walls and ceilings.
- The panorama from the terrace in front of the basilica, where you can pick out the rooftops of the old town, the rivers and the city beyond.
- The old chapel beside the basilica, the earlier sanctuary that the pilgrimage tradition grew around.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour for the basilica and the terrace, longer if you want to linger over the view or the interior.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light over the city, and check current opening hours before you set out.
- The hill is steep. You can climb from the old town on foot or take public transport up, and walking down afterwards is easier on the legs.
- The Roman theatres of Fourvière are close by, so you can combine both in one visit and see two very different layers of Lyon's past.
