Acerca de Harley Street
Harley Street is a long Georgian street in Marylebone, London, known around the world as the address of private medical specialists. Its name has stood for expert medicine for well over a century, and it also turns up in Sherlock Holmes fiction, which makes it a good stop for anyone curious about both London history and Conan Doyle.
The story behind it
Harley Street was laid out in the 18th century as part of the Marylebone estate of the Harley family, and it takes its name from them. Doctors began to settle here in numbers during the 19th century, and the street gradually became shorthand for top-level private medical care.
That reputation made it a natural address for fiction. In Arthur Conan Doyle's story "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot", published in 1910, a Harley Street physician named Dr Moore Agar is mentioned in connection with Holmes. Conan Doyle knew the medical world well, having trained as a doctor himself. He said more than once that Holmes was inspired by Joseph Bell, an Edinburgh surgeon for whom he worked as a clerk, and who was famous for drawing sharp conclusions from small observations about his patients.
What to look for
- Rows of tall Georgian brick townhouses, many with the regular windows and doorways typical of 18th-century London terraces.
- Polished brass nameplates beside the front doors, listing the doctors and specialists who practise inside.
- The long, straight line of the street itself, which gives a clear feel for how this part of Marylebone was planned.
- The quiet, businesslike atmosphere, a contrast with the busy shopping streets only a few minutes away.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 20 minutes to walk the street and look at the buildings; it works best as one stop within a longer walk.
- These are working medical premises, so you cannot go inside as a visitor. Enjoy the street from the pavement and keep noise down.
- Morning or late afternoon light shows off the brickwork well, and the street is usually calmer outside weekday working hours.
- Marylebone High Street, Cavendish Square and Baker Street, home of the Sherlock Holmes Museum, are all within a short walk.
