Acerca de Seville Light
The Seville Light is a decorative fountain and lamp monument on a triangular traffic island at 102 W 47th Street, at the edge of the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. Installed in 1967, it is a copy of a monument in Seville, Spain, and it marks the entrance to a shopping district designed in Spanish style. It is a good first stop for understanding how the Plaza got its look and how the city later reckoned with its founder.
The story behind it
The Country Club Plaza opened in 1923 and took its inspiration from Seville, which explains the Spanish architecture you see around it. In 1967 the sculptor Bernhard Zuckerman was commissioned to make a replica of a monument from the Plaza de los Reyes in Seville. The result is a tall shaft carved from several kinds of marble and topped with ironwork, with water falling from four masked faces near the base.
The streets around it carry a harder story. The Plaza was built by the developer J. C. Nichols (1880 to 1950), one of the most influential developers in the United States. Homes in his Country Club District were sold with covenants that barred Black and Jewish residents. The Supreme Court made such covenants unenforceable in 1948, but the wording stayed in property deeds for decades. Historians connect these policies to the divide along Troost Avenue that still shapes Kansas City. In 2020 the parks board voted to remove the Nichols name from the parkway beside you, now Mill Creek Parkway, and from the fountain in the neighbouring park.
What to look for
- The four stone masks near the base, each pouring water toward the traffic around the island.
- The marble shaft, which mixes several kinds of stone and rises to a crown of delicate ironwork.
- The Spanish-style architecture of the Plaza just beyond, which shows the Seville idea the whole district was built around.
- The parkway signs and the park along Mill Creek, where the 2020 name changes are part of the story of the place.
Tips for your visit
- Allow ten to fifteen minutes here. It is a roadside monument, best seen on foot from the pavement rather than from a car.
- Stay on the pavement and cross at the signals, as the fountain sits on a busy traffic island.
- Come in daylight to see the carving, then return in the evening if you want to see the Plaza lit up.
- The Country Club Plaza is next door, so pair the stop with a walk through its shops, courtyards and restaurants.
