Acerca de Gouda Town Hall
Gouda Town Hall (Stadhuis) is a Gothic building standing in the middle of the Markt, the main square of Gouda in the Netherlands. It dates from the middle of the 15th century and is among the oldest Gothic town halls in the country. It is still the heart of the city, and the square around it is the best place to get a feel for Gouda.
The story behind it
Gouda received city rights in 1272, and in the centuries that followed it grew prosperous on trade and its canals. The city became known for cheese, candles and clay pipes. The town hall was built around 1450 as a symbol of that civic pride, a place where the city could govern itself and receive important guests.
The building has outlasted the fires, floods and epidemics that shaped medieval Dutch towns, and it is still in use today. A carillon with small moving figures on the building recalls the granting of city rights, which ties the square to the founding of Gouda itself. Across the Markt, a short walk away, St. John's Church is the longest church in the Netherlands.
What to look for
- The pale stone Gothic facade, with its pointed turrets and decorative detail, looks very different from the plainer brick houses around the square.
- The red and white shutters stand out against the stone and make the building easy to recognise from across the Markt.
- The carillon on the building, with figures that act out the city rights story, is worth watching around the hour.
- The wide setting of the building, free-standing in the middle of the square, lets you walk all the way around it and see every side.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes to look at the exterior and the square, and more if you want to sit at a cafe on the Markt.
- Morning light is soft on the stone, and the square is usually calmer before midday.
- The interior is not always open to the public, so check current opening hours and any guided visit options before you go.
- St. John's Church and the canals of the old centre are close by, so the town hall works well as the start of a longer walk.
See it on a quest
The Great Cheese Rolling Race of Gouda is a cheese-themed quest that passes the town hall. You reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through the city, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot, so you look closely at the building instead of just photographing it. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever you like, with no guide and no set departure time.
