Fort-de-France is one of the Caribbean's most layered cities: a colonial waterfront, a library shipped from Paris, a market blazing with spices and colour, and streets painted by contemporary artists. This walk takes you through all of it.
You will pass the park where Joséphine de Beauharnais is remembered, the courtyard where merises ripen in the shade, the pastry shop that has been feeding the city since 1906, and the rum bar where the walk ends in style.
The city is best in the morning or late afternoon when the light is golden and the heat is kind. Bring water, wear light clothes, and let Fort-de-France come to you.

Where is Fort-de-France, and where does the walk start?
Fort-de-France is the capital of Martinique, in the Caribbean. The walk starts and ends at the Malecon on the waterfront, so it is easy to fit around a day in the city or a few hours ashore from a cruise ship.
What will we see on this walk through Fort-de-France?
The route takes in Garnier Pages street, Perrinon Yard, the Lumina tower, Surena Patisserie, the haunted house of lawyer Philippe Saint-Cyr, the covered market, City Hall and the Aimé Césaire theater, Saint-Louis Cathedral, the Schoelcher Library and Savannah Park. No attraction tickets are needed.
Where is Savannah Park, and is it on the route?
Yes. Savannah Park, also known as La Savane, is the last stop before you return to the Malecon. It is the park where Joséphine de Beauharnais is remembered, and the app guides you there from the Schoelcher Library.
How long does it take, and do we need to book a time?
Allow around 80 minutes to cover about 2.3 km. There is no fixed start time and no guide to meet, so you begin whenever you are ready and can pause and continue later. Playing in daylight is recommended rather than at night.
