Acerca de Oost-Indisch Huis
The Oost-Indisch Huis, the East Indian House, stands on Kloveniersburgwal as headquarters of the Amsterdam chamber of the Dutch East India Company, the famous VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie). Founded in 1602, the VOC was revolutionary: it was the world's first public international company, operated by shareholders who could buy and sell stakes in the enterprise. It invented the joint-stock company, the ancestor of every modern corporation.
The building itself, completed in 1606, was the first building constructed specifically as headquarters for the VOC. Before that, the company had rented spaces, improvised offices, made do. But the Oost-Indisch Huis was built from the ground up to serve the needs of an organization that was transforming global commerce. Hendrick de Keyser likely designed it, placing the building in capable hands.
Inside those walls, extraordinary activity unfolded. The building functioned simultaneously as a warehouse for the spices, silks, and exotic goods that arrived from the East Indies; as offices where business was conducted; as an auction room where merchants bid on goods; and as a map archive where the most closely guarded secrets of world geography were stored. It was the nerve center of a commercial empire that spanned from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan.
The Heeren XVII, the "Lords Seventeen," the governing board of the VOC, met here to make decisions that affected millions of lives across the globe. Ship crews were recruited from these locations, packed off to serve for years in dangerous conditions for wages that promised wealth but often delivered only death. The building witnessed the birth of modern colonialism, the extraction of resources from distant lands, and the consolidation of Dutch power.
Today, the Oost-Indisch Huis is owned by the University of Amsterdam and serves cultural purposes. It's a building that carries this weight, where you stand in spaces where decisions were made that changed world history. It's a place to reckon with the complexities of Amsterdam's past.
